One of the smartest things I've done in life is have a baby within a week of Alanna the Planner's lil guy....cue the ‘shared parties’!! We needed something festive for both boys and girls for Miss and Mr 4 and nothing says party like a good old Luau (plus we got to pretend we were somewhere a bit more tropical for the day!)
The idea was based on the super super cool honeycomb fruit in the store. I just can’t get enough of that fruit, it looks amazing on its own or strung up in bunches like a hanging fruit salad. We had it all...pineapples, mangoes, strawberries, apples, grapes and cherries. You can’t help but feel tropical. Those wee honeycomb parrots looked fab in the palm trees too thanks to one of the local two dollar stores.
The cake was a combination of images and ideas I’d found from good old Pinterest. Don’t tell anyone but the bottom layer was fake....phew that makes life easier! Middle layer was white choc mud cake surrounded by choc wafer sticks to look like bamboo and the top layer was coconut cake. My hubby was sweet talked into making the tiki face....well I’ll call it sweet talked anyway, he may call it something else. All topped off with tropical coloured candles.
The sweets table was a riot of tropical colours...lots of yellow, blue, red, and green. The table was covered in as much tropical fabric and we could find and a few tropical leaves added in for theatre. The leaf planter made the perfect vessel for our yellow and white striped paper straws. Then Alanna filled huge conch shells with fruit shaped lollies.
The ‘volcano’ like cupcakes were vanilla with butter cream icing using red blue and yellow swirl cases and topped with yellow, green and red rock sugar. I also made mini pineapple cookies which the kids helped with...a fun afternoon in itself! With all those lollies and bikkies all we needed to do was leave out some green and yellow candy striped bags for a help yourself take home treat.
